Callie is an Enneagram life coach based out of Colorado, and she’s passionate about helping people grow. Bonus, this gal loves Jesus! Hear her wisdom about Enneagram subtypes, what they look like, and how they operate in different situations.

Subtypes are variations of each Enneagram personality type. There are three subtypes to each Enneagram number: the Social Subtype, the One to One Subtype, & the Self Preservation Subtype. Here’s how these subtypes would act in a social setting:

  • Social Subtype: Walks into a party, know the important person is (to them), and wants to win approval from that person.
  • One to One Subtype: Walks into a party, wants deep connection or a fun conversation, and seeks that out.
  • Self Preservation Subtype: Walks into a party, wants to know the environment first (where’s the food, the bathroom, the place to sit, etc…)

Below, we break down the Enneagram Subtypes to the head/thinking triad (5s, 6s, & 7s). Remember that if your number doesn’t fall into this category, it’s the number of someone you care about. Play the episode (located above) and see the details below about subtypes.

Subtypes for 5s

  • Social Subtype (Totem): They can commonly mistype at 9s because they can be a little more outgoing. This subtype is the most extroverted out of all Enneagram 5s. They like to connect with people, and share their ideas, values, and opinions.
  • One to One Subtype (Confidence): They can be blunt with a vibrant inner life. They feel alive and passionate with their ideas. This excitement shows itself when they are in one on one conversations.
  • Self Preservation Subtype (Castle): They like creating a safe place for themselves, in order to feel protected as well as filling the need to control privacy. This action brings about their highly desired security.

Subtypes for 6s

  • Social Subtype (Duty): They focus on obeying rules and doing things correctly. This can lead to mistyping as a 1 (think back to core motivations). They use calculated moves to win the respect of the important people in their lives.
  • One to One Subtype (Strength/Beauty): They want to prepare themselves physically and mentally for anything. They have mentally done the work and walked through situations that could arise. They have an intense focus to improve life, and they are bold with their relationships. It’s common to use bravery to cover fear.
  • Self Preservation Subtype (Warmth): They desire strong, reliable alliances. This helps them feel connected and secure. They are good at bringing their chosen group together.

Subtypes for 7s

  • Social Subtype (Sacrifice): They are willing to sacrifice their own needs in order to win approval of people. They will also sacrifice for sake of the group. They know how to assert their authority, and can struggle with being obsessive and impulsive.
  • One to One Subtype (Suggestibility): This subtype can be more gullible, but they are confident, enthusiastic, and lighthearted. They can be mentally present and focus on existing possibilities in life.
  • Self Preservation Subtype (Keeper of the Castle): They are cheerful, talkative, and make sure there’s always an upbeat environment. They can be self indulgent and show they admire others through charming (which is why they can mistype as 3s).
