The Negatives to Resenting Others

When it comes to envy, we don’t always mean something tangible. Sure, it could be envy of a car, job, or marriage, but it could also mean envy of other people’s happiness, confidence, personality, etc…There are major pitfalls to resenting other people’s successes which can produce an unfruitful, unhappy life. Here are just a few:

  • Stuck in a comparison trap
  • Lose focus of your own path
  • Overlook your skill sets
  • Become obsessed or unproductive
  • Feeling of insecurity and lack of confidence

Maybe your measure of success is unhealthily skewed. Think about how you are determining what success looks like for you, not others. Where are your thoughts rooted? What is your inner dialogue like? Do you find yourself saying, “I’m not ____ enough.” Success leaves trails, so you can seek the wise counsel, but shouldn’t harbor negative feelings when another person has a victory.

How to Quit Being Envious

Along with the Biblical view of not coveting, we know through research that longterm jealousy is toxic mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. First, change your circumstance. This could mean physically and with your mindset. Always make sure you’re aligning your behavior with your knowledge and goals. God has called you to your specific race, not someone else’s.

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 3:14

Avoid comparison and know that you are not in charge of what is fair. We dive into what this means as far as the spiritual realm, and at the end of the day, we know life will never be fair. Remember that success begets success, so make sure you’re creating a realistic working definition of what success looks like in your life. In this podcast episode, we walk you through examples along with tips and tactics on how to do this.

More Tips

We heavily discuss this in our Get Out Of Your Head mini series: replace negative thoughts with rational ones. This sounds so simple, yet we don’t do it as much as we should. Then we look back and wonder how our thought life got here. Take every thought captive.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5
