How to Memorize Names

Why Knowing Names Matters

Boil any relationship down and what do you get at the very bottom. Connection. If you want to grow a trustworthy, reliable relationship, there must be connection, common ground, and common goals (see this episode to get your started on those points). If you want to help people grow closer to God and one another, you’ve got to lay a core foundation (on faith in Jesus).

With that point being made, now we go onto one of the most important aspects of strengthening relationships; knowing names. If you’re reading this going , “I’m just not good at memorizing names.”, we implore you to listen to this episode and be convinced otherwise.

Your name is one of the first gifts given to you. It stays with you all your life. Part of your identity lies within your name. God takes the time to know each one of us on a deeply personal level. He even know the number of hairs on your head. Wow! The least we can do is attempt to grow relationship that point back to God by relfecting what he has done for us. A way of loving someone well is to know their name.

No worries, people! This episode is stuffed full of ways on how to memorize names. Even if you just begin implementing one of the many strategies we discuss, you’ll be on your way in no time! It’s worth the work. God’s people are worth your effort. One of the best ways to begin knowing someone is to know their name. You could be missing out on a connection due to your lack of effort. Tips for Memorizing Names

Ever wonder how someone has the skill set to memorize names? You can do it too! All it takes is some effort and finding a strategy that works for you and how your brain works. We heavily discuss all the strategies mentioned below, so if one seems confusing, be sure to scroll back up and press play so you can learn the best way on how to memorize names:

  • ask how it’s spelled
  • repeat their name after they say it
  • say their name back to them
  • attach it to a feature/trait
  • add names notes in phone
  • look on website for names
  • recap summary who they are
  • ask them to repeat their name
  • write their name down
  • pray for that person using their name
  • repetition technique
  • alliteration technique

Teamwork makes the dream work, right? In this episode, Brooke and Faren discuss what to do when you’re in too deep in the conversation and still don’t remember their name. It happens to all of us, so it’s important to have a plan when you get stuck. We cover multiple strategies here too! Again, these methods are tested and have worked for us!

Nicknames or Not?

When learning how to memorize names better, it’s important to now which name to learn. Do they go by a nickname, shortened name, alias? Nothing says “I don’t really don’t know you at all” when you call them by a name they hate or absolutely don’t go by. Yes, we talk about our blunders here and what we’ve done to bounce back.

Same goes for the workplace or formal settings. Your coworker may go by one name at the office, but prefer to have their title alongside their name when our at a gala.
