CLICK PLAY TO LISTEN!

In episode 37, Brooke & Faren interview one of their preachers, Randy! If you want to hear a preacher who leads from the front, look no further! Randy gives us honest, vulnerable anecdotes along with practical, easy-to-implement application points.

  • When to be vulnerable?
  • With whom should we be vulnerable?
  • How should we be vulnerable?
  • How do we respond to vulnerability?
  • What do we share when being vulnerable?
  • Why should we be vulnerable?

Everybody struggles. It’s vital that we are transparent (appropriately) in order to help grow ourselves. Looking through a Christian lens, we can surround ourselves with wise counsel who will help us be vulnerable in a healthy, productive way.

Who are good candidates for wise counsel?

  • Do they morally align with you?
  • Have you developed a healthy friendship with them?
  • Are they willing to intentional with spiritual growth?
  • Are they willing to meet with you consistently?
  • Can they speak truth into you?

These are just some of the many examples Randy gives in order to helps us find the right people to speak life into us. He does warn us with this Bible verse…

“Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.”

Matthew 7:6

Finding the right people to share life with can take time, but it is so worth the work. Once you find your village, have agreed upon terms to where you can help each other through good times and bad.

How to be vulnerable with God

There is something very freeing when we just confess what’s in our hearts or what we’ve done. The Bible talks about confessing sins to one another (accountability), so that should be the same when we talk to God.

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.”

James 5:16

Be sure to check out the full episode to hear Randy explain this in depth.

Not sure how to pray? Read this!

Not sure where to start when is comes to praying to God? No worries! Here’s something to think about…Do you know how to talk? Great! Just do that. It can be that simple. God loves you and wants to hear from you even though it may seem silly to you at first.

If talking just seems like a big first step, you may try this to start…Write it out, journal it, write a note/letter. It doesn’t have to be a certain length. Don’t over complicate it. God hears you.

Vulnerability with your significant other

Randy gives some amazing PRO TIPS in this portion of the podcast on how to approach your spouse if you’re being vulnerable, and how to respond to your spouse when they open up to you.

  • establish vulnerability ground rules
  • seek wise counsel if needed
  • set expectations for how vulnerability looks in your relationship
  • support your spouse, be on the same team
  • mind your tone and delivery on giving/receiving vulnerability
  • ask good questions and follow up questions appropriately

We close Randy’s interview with some vulnerability “dos” and “don’ts”. Be sure to listen to the full episode to hear all the in depth details we discuss on this week’s episode.

Remember, vulnerability isn’t a checklist. We all need accountability and community when exercising vulnerability responsibly. Vulnerability isn’t always ugly. We can celebrate the great things God is doing in our lives!
