The Negatives to Risk Aversion

We certainly address this topic in various mini series (Everything is Figureoutable, Dream Big, to name a couple); daydreaming is not action. There is a major difference between planning and research, and actually chipping away at your goals by taking action. If you struggle with this, get down to the root cause of why you’re holding yourself back. Some common reasons for this may be fear based, thinking luck is somehow involved, or even being stuck in a comparison trap.

The truth is, if God is calling you to take action and step forward, we better pay attention and start moving. God has an amazing plan for you, so when we don’t take action like we’re called to do, we miss out on the wonderful things God is trying to give us. Don’t let any excuses hold you back from fulfilling God’s purpose for your life. Here are the negatives to totally avoiding risks:

  • Miss out on opportunities God is giving you
  • Remain stagnant with no growth
  • Negative impact on decision making skills
  • Incorrectly judge how much control we have
  • Emotions negatively affect decisions

How to Combat Fear of Risks

The great news is that we can take simple steps so we don’t fear taking calculated risks. We discuss how this practically looks in the episode, so be sure to scroll up to tune in! Here are some pro tips:

  • Get comfortable being uncomfortable
  • Meditate/journal
  • Do a thought audit
  • Focus on logic
  • Remember God’s timing is perfect
  • Balance your emotions with logic
  • Seek counseling as needed
  • Have a positive mindset shift

Another way to look at it would be to ask yourself, “If my friend came to me asking advice on this topic, what would I say?” So many times we can be great encouragers to our friends, but we can overlook our needing a pep talk too. Don’t be afraid to get a friend to pep talk you and walk through what’s rational and irrational. You can create a pro/con chart, look at both worst case and best case scenarios, and practice grace and forgiveness towards yourself. Again, we cover this in the episode, so be sure to tune in!

More Tips

At the end of each episode in this mini series, we talk about quick tips that are helpful and/or not helpful. Make sure you stick around until the end to learn how to take calculated risks. Here are some pro tips:

  • Develop evidence to support/disprove the risk
  • Combat the lies and negative narrative in your head
  • Recognize irrational thoughts and combat with wisdom
  • Take calculated risks even if you’re uncomfortable
