Episode 10: Listener’s Choice- Surviving Staff Development as a 1st Year Teacher

In this episode, we give you our TOP TEN tips on how to survive staff development as a first year teacher.

Typically two weeks before students arrive for the 1st day of school, teachers around America have their days filled with staff development. Luckily, there are some amazing administrators out there who rock the socks off of P.D. (you know who you are).

Even having an amazing staff in place, it can still be overwhelming to start a brand new career. Each school district (and sometimes each school) has a different set of policies as well as hidden rules.

Our goal is to help alleviate some of the potential stress by giving you some of these tips. While we won’t give everything away that’s in the podcast episode, here are 3 of the 10 tips to surviving staff development as a first year teacher:

1.Check Your Email NOW

Just because the school year hasn’t started doesn’t mean important emails are on hold. Check your email often so that you can make sure you’re not missing out on important information.

Principals will send out information via email so they can reduce the amount of face-to-face meetings you would have to attend (yay again for great admin!). Trust us, fully reading all emails will reduce the amount of wasted time; therefore, giving you extra time to take care of your high priority tasks.

2.Phone Etiquette

The “Golden Rule” certainly applies here. If you are expecting your students to focus during lessons and be off their cell phones, you must do the same in faculty meetings. Trust us, the presenter always knows who is on their phones.

Making good impressions with great intentions is vital during staff development. Stay off your phone if at all possible. In the event you must take a call, excuse yourself and limit your time away from the meeting. Many of the meetings are due to being in compliance with the law, so if you miss, you may have to meet in a small group to hear the information again.

3. Use Your Time Wisely

Like mentioned before, some meetings are required by law. Staff development schedules are typically jam-packed with information, meetings, & planning that must take place. It’s important to maximize your free time, whenever that is, to hit that priority list again.

Map out a plan of attack on what needs to be done by certain days. Get those copies made, outline your semester, speak with your mentor, etc… all of these and more are things you should be doing during your staff development days.
