David and Goliath

In episode 215, “David and Goliath”, Brooke & Faren discuss the meaning of 1 Samuel 17:37 when David defeats Goliath the Philistine. Hear how this Bible story helps us learn to have a holy confidence in how God prepares us for the giants we’ll face in our lives. We use our © Read Pray Talk Tell Method to discover ways we can practically live this scripture out in everyday life. The Kid Classics mini series begins on episode 209 and goes through episode 218 of the Witty & Gritty podcast.

Read About God’s Victory

We’re past halfway in our Kid Classics Mini Series, and this week we feature David and Goliath. To catch you up on the Israelite drama and context, we made a few bullets (be sure to listen to episode 215 to hear more details):

  • The Israelites wanted a king (and were kind of whiney about it)
  • God allows it and Saul becomes king
  • Saul ends up tormented (young David playing the harp helps)
  • Saul and friends are facing off with the Philistines
  • All the Israelite fighters are afraid of Goliath
  • Young David brings his brothers lunch and gets the scoop on Goliath

Now we’re almost to our verse in 1 Samuel. David sees that all the Israelite men are afraid to go up against the Philistine champion, Goliath. He also realizes that since God is on their side, there’s nothing here to worry about. In fact, David volunteers to go head to head with the giant!

“The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!”

1 Samuel 17:37

Pray Through your Lions, Bears, and Giants

From our verse today, it’s clear that young David is not panicking at all about if he will beat Goliath. Why? Because it’s not David fighting Goliath, it’s God fighting Goliath through David. God has gotten David out of many intense situations (lions and bears), so he knows God will do it again.

Through this scripture we have several ways to pray this over our lives, so be sure to listen to episode 215. Here are a couple of prayers:

  • Strengthened faith when facing giants
  • Perspective shift in preparation (your lions and bears)
  • Confidence in your steps as God guides you

We know that on this side of Heaven, we will face our lions, bears, and giants. None of those seem easy and feel like quite the challenge. Remember that God will carry you through. Now, is it possible you’ll get hurt by your metaphorical lion and get some scars? Absolutely. Will God defeating a lion through you make you spiritually tougher? You bet!

Talk to Those Before You

Here’s some great news! There are people who have gone before you and have taken on these lions, bears, and giants. Thank you, God, for giving us people who can show us what they did in order to overcome! Remember to keep God first, ask for His guidance, and then follow through when he points you in a direction.

Are you struggling with trauma? Seek counseling. Struggling with infertility? You’re not alone! Have diagnosis? God has people lined up for you for wise counsel. Ask god to reveal to you people who’ve gone before or have experienced something that you’re currently going through.

  • Pray for guidance on specific people
  • Follow through with seeking wise counsel
  • Practice healthy boundaries and healthy vulnerability
  • Tell your Christian inner circle about the struggle

Tell Them About Giants

If we take a closer look at the lives of our children, we can see that they’re facing their own giants. This can look like peer pressure, toxic relationships, or that dang math class that gets harder by the second. You’ve had the chance to live some life before them, so bring all the advice you can in manageable chunks. Don’t worry, we break down exactly how to do this in episode 215 (scroll up and press play).

We also dive into speaking life into your children. God has gifted them with certain personality traits and skills. Play to those strengths, and challenge your kids to find ways to take those traits and use them to glorify God. Who knows, maybe they just need a rock to take down their giant.

We hope you enjoyed episode 215, “David and Goliath”, through our © Read Pray Talk Tell Method. Now it’s up to you to work through the Bible chapter discussed, pray about this verse using the prompts given, have biblical community around this verse, and go point others to Christ with the tips we give. Remember, when you read, pray, talk, tell consistently, you’ll grow your faith in God more deeply. Tune in next week to hear another breakdown of a Bible verse!
