Read God’s Pep Talk

If you’ve been playing along at home for our Kid Classics mini series, you’ve seen us cover Adam & Eve, Noah and the Ark, and Joseph and his brothers, and Moses and the Red Sea. We’re now at the part of the story where Moses passes the torch to Joshua, who will then lead the Israelites into the promised land (reading Joshua chapters 1-5 will be helpful).

The triumph in the story of Joshua and Jericho happened in such a way that the victory can only point to God’s power. The Israelites were faithful, obedient, and showed up day after day. Here’s the promise God gave to Joshua in His pep talk:

“But the Lord said to Joshua, “I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong warriors.”

Joshua 6:2

Pray Through the Promise

The story of Joshua and Jericho is one of trust. Joshua knew he had big shoes to fill with following Moses’ leadership, and that is a tough position for anyone. Good thing God is the best at pep talks. This is why we love the first several verses in chapter 6!

In episode 213, we discuss ways to pray through the promises of God, even if we don’t see how it can actually happen. Think about it, God told Joshua to walk around Jericho (among other unheard of strategies), and the walls would fall down. Now, imagine telling that to your people. If you need your people to be on board with a promise God has given you, start praying for that.

Pray to remember God’s promises, especially on the hard days. Spend time in reflection, silence, and tune into what the Holy Spirit is saying. Remember, listening with obedience action is a solid prayer. Taking some time reading this in action through the lens of Joshua and Jericho can helps us see how this looks.

Talk About Growing Confidence

It can be hard to hold onto a promise God has given you. Maybe it sounds impossible, hard to reach, or you just don’t see how it can truly happen. Whatever your feelings are towards the fruition process, pray through it, confirm it through His Word, and share it with your church life group.

God doesn’t want us to walk through life alone, and when we share our news with others, they can help us on the hard days and rejoice on the good days. Spend some time reflecting with your community, pray over it, and keep each other updated.

The power of Biblical community strengthens us, spurs us on, and gives us the ability to encourage each other along the way. We can see God moving and working when we talk about our victories and God nudges along the way.

Tell About Attitude

It’s always interesting to get kids’ opinions on how they would feel or what they would do in certain situations. Read through God’s instructions to Joshua on how to conquer Jericho and ask your kids how they would react. Ask about their thoughts, attitude, opinion, and how they would focus their faith on Christ. This will give you an inside peek at how their minds work. Then you can drive home the main point of following God’s instructions even if it doesn’t make sense yet.

We hope you enjoyed episode 213, “Joshua and Jericho”, through our © Read Pray Talk Tell Method. Now it’s up to you to work through the Bible chapter discussed, pray about this verse using the prompts given, have biblical community around this verse, and go point others to Christ with the tips we give. Remember, when you read, pray, talk, tell consistently, you’ll grow your faith in God more deeply. Tune in next week to hear another breakdown of a Bible verse!
