Read About Perspective
Joseph has a long back story up until the point we hit our verse for the week, so make sure you don’t miss the beginning of episode 211. A quick “Brooke Notes” recap: so far in the Kid Classics mini series we’ve talked about creation, Adam & Eve, and Noah. Between Noah and Joseph reuniting with his brothers there was the Tower of Babel, Abraham and Isaac, and then Isaac had sons (Jacob and Esau).
Jacob had 12 sons, who would eventually become the 12 tribes of Israel. Very long story short, Joseph was the favorite brother and his brothers betrayed him because they were so jealous. Joseph had highs and lows after this betrayal, which brings us all the way to the point in our scripture that we’re discussing in this week’s episode. This is when Joseph reveals who he is to his brothers and his words to them:
“But don’t be upset, and don’t be angry with yourselves for selling me to this place. It was God who sent me here ahead of you to preserve your lives.”
Genesis 45:5
Joseph’s perspective in this situation show great spiritual maturity. We know that God can redeem all our mistakes for His glory, and this is such a great example. Joseph has the wherewithal to see God’s hand moving in his circumstance.
Pray for Spiritual Perspective
Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? Joseph had it bad in some seasons of life, but he was able to honor God through each season. No matter what season or circumstance life is throwing your way, remember that there is always a way to honor God and stay aligned with His plan through it all.
We encourage you to have Joseph’s perspective, and invite you to pray to see God’s hand moving in your highs and lows of life. Pray to see the God nods, gain wisdom, and experience peace. We know the scariest place to be is outside of God’s plan, so let’s take some time to pray for direction, perseverance, and displaying grace through trials.
Talk Through Developing Skills
When we’re in the midst of a valley, it can be hard to see outside of the chaos. This is when the power of reflection comes in handy. Think back and take inventory of all the trials God has gotten you through. If you need some help, this is when you call in your Christian community. Together you can discuss your valleys, what worked/didn’t work, and pray over each other.
Community with fellow Christians is never one sided. When you see a friend struggling, speak life into them. Tell them what worked for you, and pray for them. If the valley feels like it’s just too much, this is where you inner circle steps up. Here are ways your community can help each other:
- Pray over them
- Check in consistently
- Offload custodial duties or manageable tasks
- Encourage and uplift
- Speak truth and wisdom
- Love each other well
This all goes for both mountains and valleys. We can praise God no matter our situation, and we can lift each other up any day of the year.
Tell About Gratitude
Hope is a beautiful thing. We have hope in Jesus, and we can look back and see joy in all circumstances. Gratitude practice, reflection, and finding joy are all skill sets that we can teach our children. With this strategy, we can equip our kids to be able to always find the silver lining, and look to the promises of God.
In episode 211, “Joseph’s Perspective”, we take Joseph’s story and give strategies on how we can teach and sharpen skill sets that are needed throughout the lives of our children. Don’t we want our kids to have hope and joy no matter their life circumstance? Be sure to tune into the episode to hear practical tips!
