In this Witty & Gritty Podcast interview session with David, we discuss spiritual grit and how to grow spiritually through both good and bad seasons of life.

What is spiritual grit? It’s when we want to quit, but we keep pressing on. We keep pushing. We move ourselves forward by doing the next right thing. We stick with spiritual disciplines and surround ourselves with people who do the same.

PRESS ON

In every are of life, we must have long terms goals. We want to strive towards where we should be; press on towards the finish line.

  • Make goals a priority
  • Be intentional about about effort
  • Be wise about the roadmap to success

Over time, grit becomes evident financially, physically, relationally, developmentally, spiritually…It’s intentional, there’s a plan.

Philippians 3:14 says, “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” We must wholeheartedly pursue spiritual grit. We must have a long term purpose that’s out in front of us.

DEVELOPING SPIRITUAL GRIT

Following Angela Duckworth’s model of interest, practice, purpose, & hope, we can see how spiritual grit can be developed over the course of time.

  • Interest: the desire to want to be spiritually gritty must be apparent
  • Practice: spiritual disciplines like praying & reading the Bible
  • Purpose: love others, share the good news, live holy and contented
  • Hope: look more and more like Christ as time passes

Over time, our spiritual grit gains stamina, we gain confidence, and we grow to become more Christlike every day.

SUSTAINING SPIRITUAL GRIT

The development of spiritual grit must become a new mindset that occurs and is practiced. Each day, we can grow and sustain our spiritual grit by:

  • having a helpful routine
  • finding the right devotional that fits you
  • reading the Bible
  • praying
  • finding an accountability system
  • worshiping
  • fasting
  • being in community

These are just some of the many ways we can grow and sustain our spiritual grit. It takes discipline, time, and effort to better these skill sets, so doing this with other likeminded people will help!
