All right, who’s Enneagram number touches a 1? To the perfectionists, this will be a struggle, but remember, perfectionism is poison. There is only one who is perfect, and trust us, Jesus is the only one who can attain that.

High Standards Does Not Mean Perfection

Get this in your head now, before you let perfectionism suck the life out of you. You can have high standards and not be perfect. Yep. It’s not either low standards or perfection. There is gray. High standards is the new awesome!

Have all the high standards you want, please, but do not quit the second it’s not going perfectly. Humans cannot sustain a lifestyle of perfection. Remember, if you’re pouring all of yourself into one aspect of life for perfection’s sake, you’ll neglect the other bucket of life.

Give Yourself Space and Grace. The space to grow and the grace to pick yourself back up when failure hits. Again, this isn’t lowering expectations; make sure you’re stretching yourself to grow.

Start! Even if it’s Ugly

Don’t let your beginner status stop you! Remember riding a bike for the first time? Scrapes, cuts, bruises, and finally…being able to ride a bike without falling. Heck, if you ride bikes into adulthood, you’ll fall even with tons of experience.

You have started before it was perfect so many times already in life. Harness that now. You’ve figured out how to walk, how to ride a bike, how to drive…you can do this! Don’t get caught up in lack of experience. Embrace the messy middle!

“We’ll start on ______(insert the thing you want to accomplish) when we have more experience.” Start the gym when I’m in shape. Go to church when I’m right with God. Wait…the only way to gain experience and growth is by actually putting yourself out there.

Just by getting reps (even if they’re ugly), you are gaining experience and momentum. That is how you get closer to achieving your goals.

Ultimately it Comes Down to Bravery

The definition of being brave is when you’re afraid to do something, but you do it anyway. We know that failure is inevitable, BUT failure is an event. You may have experienced failure, but YOU are not a failure.

PRO TIP: Have a plan in place for when failure happens. You can even plan this out before bumps in the road interrupt your dreams. Look ahead to see where failure may creep in, prep, and plan ahead of time how you’re going to respond and leverage the event. Creating leverage is key, otherwise, it’s a waste of an experience.

Patience is key. Success is going to take time, so trust the process. It is vital to learn lessons along the way. Whether it’s through the small victories, or the hiccups, leveraging the wisdom will be an ultimate game changer.

Quick Tips to Help You!

  • Perfectionism loves drama: take small, positive steps
  • Plan ahead for potential setbacks: anticipate, brainstorm, prepare
  • Embrace lack of confidence: is it really fear or comparison or perfectionism? Take a closer look and find out what is really driving the lack of confidence
  • Do the Next Right Thing!: Sometimes we can only do the very next step
  • Patience is key: trust the process and the learning
