Reading About the Importance of Armor

If you’ve been following along in our Ephesians Mini Series, you know we’ve covered the first five chapters of the book. Today, we’re pulling the section titled “The Armor of God” from chapter six. We highly encourage you to go back and read through Ephesians chapers 1-5 (or listen to episodes 194-197 to grab some context about what’s happening in Paul’s letter.

The Armor of God section is Ephesians 6:10-18 with the actual armor starting in verse 13 We take some time to break down the before and after verses. In this episode you’ll learn how we’ll be able to stand against satan, fight strong, and be able to suit up with God on your side.

“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

Ephesians 6:13-17

Just like any uniform or equipment, the armor of God needs to be taken good care of and maintained. Using our © Read Pray Talk Tell method will help you get there! If you want to study more in depth on this topic, grab our 30 Day Bible Reading Plan: Armor of God.

Praying Over Your Armor

The last verse in the Armor of God section (Ephesians 6:18) talks about praying at all times and on ever occasion. This means if it crosses your mind, pray on it! There are six parts of the armor of God, so how are you doing with each of these? Take some time and pray about the significance of each piece, how well you’re maintaining it, and what you can do to do better in your weak areas. Here is another quick glance at the pieces of armor:

  • Belt of Truth
  • Body Armor of Righteousness
  • Shoes that comes from Peace from the Good News
  • Shield of Faith
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit (God’s Word)

The thing about armor, is that you don’t go into battle with missing pieces. This means that every day we walk through life, we need to suit up mindfully. You don’t go to the store without your shoes, so if you knew you were walking into battle you really wouldn’t forget. Our challenge to you is to memorize the armor of God, and pray over it each morning before you start your day.

Talk and Equip Each Other

We know that God equips us and gives us every thing we need. He’s given us a step by step guide in Ephesians on how to suit up for everyday life. Take some time with your home group and go through each piece of the armor of God. Where are each of your struggling? What are the strengths y’all have? In this part of episode 198, we walk through several examples of leaning on each other, so be sure to scroll back up and press play. You can help equip each other by doing the following:

  • Choose vulnerability and ask for help
  • Give specific support according to need and strength
  • Lift each other up in prayer
  • Carry them through a season if they need it

Again, we walk through a few specific examples if you need a quick brainstorm session. We encourage you to take this to your home group and talk it out, build each other up, and support each other where it’s needed.

Tell Kids How to Suit Up

What if we told you there was a way to place spiritual protection around your kids? Would you do that thing? Good news! You can! Teach your kids about the armor of God, walk through what it looks like to suit up, and show them how to pray on all occasions. When we do this, we set our kids up for success.

Memorize the armor of God with your kids, and give them real life examples on when this comes in handy. In this part of the episode we mention specifics, one in particular being remembering your body armor of righteousness when your college kid goes on Spring Break. We give a ton of great examples, so make sure you tune into episode 198 of the Witty & Gritty podcast. Teach your kids how to stay alert.

We hope you enjoyed episode 198, “Armor of God”, through our © Read Pray Talk Tell Method. Now it’s up to you to work through the Bible chapter discussed, pray about this verse using the prompts given, have biblical community around this verse, and go point others to Christ with the tips we give. Remember, when you read, pray, talk, tell consistently, you’ll grow your faith in God more deeply. Tune in next week to hear another breakdown of a Bible verse!
