Callie is an Enneagram life coach based out of Colorado, and she’s passionate about helping people grow. Bonus, this gal loves Jesus! Hear her wisdom about Enneagram subtypes, what they look like, and how they operate in different situations.

Subtypes are variations of each Enneagram personality type. There are three subtypes to each Enneagram number: the Social Subtype, the One to One Subtype, & the Self Preservation Subtype. Here’s how these subtypes would act in a social setting:

  • Social Subtype: Walks into a party, knows who the important person is (to them), and wants to win approval from that person.
  • One to One Subtype: Walks into a party, wants deep connection or a fun conversation, and seeks that out.
  • Self Preservation Subtype: Walks into a party, wants to know the environment first (where’s the food, the bathroom, the place to sit, etc…)

Below, we break down the Enneagram Subtypes to the anger/gut triad (8s, 9s, & 1s). Remember that if your number doesn’t fall into this category, it’s the number of someone you care about. Play the episode (located above) and see the details below about subtypes.

Subtypes for 8s

  • Social Subtype (Solitary): Uses control to connect with people to win social status. They’re charming and have the ability to develop relationships.
  • One to One Subtype (Possession): Most intense on the Enneagram, and can make others uncomfortable with intense conversations(they feel like it’s connecting and bonding to them). They can be a bit edgy and blunt.
  • Self Preservation Subtype (Satisfaction): They are more focused on survival and taking control of their environment. They’ll take care of business to make their surrounding environment how they want it (cleanliness, food how they like, etc…).

Subtypes for 9s

  • Social Subtype (Participation): Can often be mistaken for types 7 & 4. They’re outgoing, seek social status or connection, wants strong community, & appreciates genuine moments.
  • One to One Subtype (Fusion): More intense (especially if they wing 8). They enjoy routine, can be energetic, & can assert their opinion when feeling strongly about a topic.
  • Self Preservation Subtype (Appetite): They are gentle, go with the flow, and pursue passion in a quiet way. They can be unexpressive at times.

Subtypes for 1s

  • Social Subtype (Non-adaptable): They use energy to perfect relationships and building connections. They enjoy teaching, coaching, and put energy towards connections educating others.
  • One to One Subtype (Zeal): They believe they have an obligation to society to elevate the world around them. This can look like pastors and leaders. They put energy towards helping people become the best they can be (can mistype as 3s).
  • Self Preservation Subtype (Worry): The true perfectionist, perfecting environments and people around them. They do this because those pieces play a role in their environment. They can be nit picky to people to control the environment, not to control the person.

Thanks for checking out the show notes for “Enneagram Subtypes for 8s, 9s, & 1s”. Be sure to listen to all three subtype interview sessions with Callie (#74, # 75, & #76). Stay tuned for some amazing insight from this Enneagram life coach.
