Seasoned with Salt

In episode 208, “Seasoned with Salt”, Brooke & Faren discuss the meaning of Colossians 4:5-6 in the Bible. Hear what Paul says to the Colossians about how to have conversations that are attractive, welcoming, and point back to God. We use our © Read Pray Talk Tell Method to discover ways we can practically live this scripture out in everyday life. The Colossians mini series begins on episode 204 and goes through episode 208 of the Witty & Gritty podcast.

Read the Conversation Details

This week’s episode concludes our Colossians mini series, and this means that you have read another book this year! Congratulations! By the end of this episode, if you’ve done the homework, you’ve read through a letter Paul wrote. Look at you go! Today, we’re talking about how to be seasoned with salt. Check out the verse Paul wrote to the Colossians:

“Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”

Colossians 4:5-6

Paul points out the obvious (but we always need reminders) that we are constantly surrounded by non believers. As we walk through life, there are lost people who need saving. We touch on reputation and representation in last week’s episode, so we’ll focus on verse six in this week’s episode.

We know that the pressure is off and we may not stress as much having deep conversations with fellow Christians. It may be a challenge, hesitation, or even fear that can make it tough to have deep conversations with non believers. Be encouraged, this verse gives us ideas as to what to pray for when we interact with those who don’t know Jesus.

When in doubt, remember that we want everyone to be in Heaven, so we can survive some temporary discomfort if that means someone will get to live eternally with God. These small details in our conversations can be life changers for the lost.

Pray Before the Conversations

In this week’s episode, “Seasoned with Salt”, we read the scripture in two different translations that give the same-but-different call to action. Here are a few prayer points that we found when diving into these verses:

  • Live wisely in our everyday life
  • Have intentional time with non believers
  • Gracious, attractive, seasoned conversations
  • Discernment on tone, delivery, and body language

Maybe you’re like our co-host, Brooke, and you need to pray that your face is inviting (say it with a smile). Maybe you’re like our other co-host, Faren, and you need to pray for a boldness when speaking to non believers. You can even pray for the non believers you’ll interact with. Here are a couple more prayers we talked about on the show:

  • Guide my conversation
  • The non believer’s heart
  • Timing, word choice, and reading the room

Talk Through Topics

As we’ve read in this week’s scripture, the way we live should be intentionally and noticeably different compared to this world. Remember, God is not of this world, and if we’re called to be more like Him every day, we can make small changes that make big differences. The more we walk through sanctification, the more seasoned with salt we’ll become.

In our “Seasoned with Salt” episode, we dive into EQ (emotional intelligence) in how to read a room, and how the details matter. Word choice, tone, body language, the actual words you use, and your face are all communicators. Do not let this overwhelm you. You can pray about all of these elements before, during, and after conversations with people. Let god be your filter with how to approach and talk to different people.

In this part of the episode, we talk about the fine line of gossip versus seeking advice on specific conversations. After praying about it first, then speak to someone who can maybe share a different point of view and help provide discernment on the tough conversation topics.

An example could look like, if you’re sharing your faith, get with others who are good at and talk about how they approach people. Ask them how they handle not the most receptive response and how they generally navigate the conversation.

Tell about Approaches

Tough conversations, well, are tough. Especially if you’re in a rough patch with your child. In this part of our “Seasoned with Salt” episode, we dive into parent/kid chats and approaches you can take depending on the situation.

As parents, we can sometimes feel like our children don’t listen (can we get an amen!). Perhaps they aren’t receiving the information in the way you explain. It could be a number of breakdown points, so this is why we give several ways to talk it out with your kids.

  • Modeling and approach (you and other siblings)
  • Kid-centered solutions
  • Emotional Intelligence development
  • Processing and communication

We cover a ton in this part of the episode in a way that is quick, simple, and actionable for you. Our combined experience as educators and moms have given us several ways to try this out, so you’ve got options to try.

We hope you enjoyed episode 208, “Seasoned with Salt”, through our © Read Pray Talk Tell Method. Now it’s up to you to work through the Bible chapter discussed, pray about this verse using the prompts given, have biblical community around this verse, and go point others to Christ with the tips we give. Remember, when you read, pray, talk, tell consistently, you’ll grow your faith in God more deeply. Tune in next week to hear another breakdown of a Bible verse!
