Read About Representing
As you grow up, you realize more and more how important your reputation is and how it affects you. Your history can follow you, your past mistakes can haunt you, but the reverse is true too. The good things you’ve done in your past can help set you up for future successes. If you know this to be true about your character alone, how much more important is it to realize you are a representative for Christ.
Eek, gut check! This week, we focus on a verse that compels us to act out of whose we are as Christians. We’re in chapter three of Colossians, so we highly recommend you’ve read chapters 1-3 and/or have caught up on our Colossians mini series. Check out what Paul says to the Colossians in this verse:
“And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.”
Colossians 3:17
We love that this verse is so generally specific (haha). Paul purposely writes whatever you do, as in, it doesn’t matter if you’re the bread winner or the bread maker; do it for God. If you’re been raised with Christ, if you’re saved, your actions are serving God.
Pray for Grace and Provision
Ask yourself, “If Jesus were doing this right now, how would it look?” Pray and ask God to reveal areas where it can get a little shakey. You are not alone in this area. In this part of episode 207, “A Representative For Christ”, we address the mundane daily tasks, complaining coworkers, tough to handle family members, and all in between.
Bottom line, we want our actions to be good representations of what Christ looks like. Pray for grace to handle suffering well, heart shifts to take place, and the energy to live well and work for the Lord. It’s not easy, but the Holy Spirit will equip and provide. Here are a few tips we discuss:
- Pray for your enemies
- Ask for intercession
- Pray more than complain
- Add in a gratitude practice
Talk Through Your Why
When we live our day to day lives, people get involved (except in rare cases). Whether it’s the cashier or your bestie, how we walk, talk, and act matter. It can be a lot of pressure when you think about it, but keep circling back to your why. Ask yourself, “Why would I want to be a good representative for Christ?” When we look at our answers, it can take all the pressure off of us. Side note: the devil is putting that toxic pressure on you, so shake that off.
Our whys should focus on making heaven crowded, making much of Jesus, and pointing to the gospel. Do we do things to make much of ourselves or for Christ? Eek, another gut check! This is where solid accountability comes into play. Let your people speak guidance into you. Sometimes they can notice a pattern before you do. Remember who you’re trying to serve. We give several tips on how to do this in episode 207, “A Representative For Christ.
Tell About Humility
More is caught than taught, and eyes are always watching you. Maybe it’s the person who is waiting to watch you mess up, but more than likely, it’s your children. Wow, coming strong with the gut checks today! Kids pick up on our habits, tone, body language and more, all without us explicitly teaching it. This is where we get the chance to talk about what being a representative for Christ should look like.
It takes humility to tell your kids how you messed up and what should’ve happened. These are great opportunities to be vulnerable and share how we can always improve. We touch on other teaching points in the episode too:
- Always do your best
- Good sportsmanship no matter the outcome
- Integrity and what it looks like
