The Negatives to Feel You’re Owed

When you hear the word entitlement, you may think it doesn’t apply to you. Here’s the sneaky part; it all starts with tiny thoughts in your head and they make an appearance in an ugly way. Here are some signs you may feel like you are owed something:

  • You think you perform better than average at most tasks
  • Feel you deserve certain things (promotions, money, possessions, etc)
  • Thinking your talents should exempt you from hard work
  • You think it’s your turn to have good things happen to you
  • When something feels unfair, you feel like it’s an injustice

These tiny thoughts creep in and start to take a foothold. If you’ve ever thought, “I deserve better than this.”, “There’s always been something special about me.”, or “That’s not fair.” you may be someone who needs to work on humility. Again, we all do this to some degree, so it’s important that we all work on this. Keep reading to hear how to combat this.

How to Stay Humble

Don’t feel the world owes you anything. In this episode, we talk about what we actually deserve. Thank God He provided a way to save us from that reality. To put it plainly, we just need to get over ourselves. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Focus on giving, not taking
  • Behave like a team player
  • Focus on efforts not importance
  • Control what you can control
  • Don’t keep score
  • Accept criticism gracefully
  • Practice humility
  • Acknowledge your flaws

Remember that you have power in choosing how you respond to your circumstances. If this is something you’re struggling with, ask God for help. Pray for peace, contentment, and wise counsel to call you out when you begin to feel the world owes you.

More Tips

At the end of each of our 13 Things episodes, we talk about what is helpful and unhelpful when it comes to each particular struggle. Focus on what you have rather than what you don’t have, and do all your work as it is unto the Lord. Think about others and their needs. How can you help others or give back? Make sure you consider others while eliminating overconfidence and scarcity mindset.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”
