The Negatives to Giving Up
As we mature, we realize that failure is inevitable. Each of us fail at one thing or another, and it’s important to normalize it. It’s what we do after the failure that defines who we are as people. If we all quit the first time we fail at something, we’ll never do anything well. As you may know by now, there are significant downfalls to quitting after there is a hiccup:
- Avoid new skills
- Fear of failure
- Negative Self fulfilling prophecy
- Limit yourself
- Learned helplessness
- Fixed mindset
No one wants to feel this way, but if we have a habit of giving up after the first fail, that can become who we think we are. Your failures don’t define you. Your worth is in Jesus. Lean on that truth, especially when the fail is a tough pill to swallow.
“Failure is part of the process of success. People who avoid failure also avoid success.”
Robert T. Kiyosaki
How to Press On Through Failure
Don’t give up after the first failure. Failure is a common humanity experience, so we need to learn to adapt, improve, and press on when it happens. We extensively discuss this in our Grit mini series, so tune into episodes 19-25 if you want to know step by step processes on how to do that. Deliberate practice is key and we know through research that grit is a better predictor of success than IQ.
Failure is a sign that i’m challenging myself, and i can choose to try again.
